Synopsis

Since ancient times, monsters known as “Kaiju” have frequently appeared in Japan and destroyed towns. Kafka, the main character, whose childhood home town was destroyed, joined the defense force with his childhood friend Mina and promised to exterminate all Kaiju. However, time passed, and at the age of 32, Kafka’s dreams were dashed and he found himself working as a dismantler of Kaiju corpses. Kafka is depressed as he watches Mina’s success as a member of the Defense Forces, but when he hears from a colleague that the age limit for the Defense Forces’ entrance exam has been raised, he decides to take the exam again. Kafka renews his determination, but then a mysterious creature erodes his body and turns him into Kaiju himself.

Review

“Kaiju No. 8” is a classic action manga story about fighting monsters, but it is unique in that the main character is 32 years old. While it is true that only the main character has the special ability to transform into Kaiju, in most cases the young people around him are more talented and mature in their thinking than he is. It is pleasant to read how he is inspired by them and grows into a trusted colleague, transcending the barriers of age and seniority. We should all try anything we want to do at any age.
