Synopsis

3×3 Eyes follows the adventures of Pai, the last remaining Sanjiyan Unkara (three-eyed mandala), and her new Wu (an immortal companion), Yakumo, as they desperately try to find a way to make Pai human. The names and settings of the yokai in the series are inspired by Chinese culture and Indian mythology, and many of the scenes are set in Tibet, India, and other parts of Asia outside of Japan.

Review

3×3 Eyes is a story that began more than 35 years ago, but its popularity has remained constant because of its unique and fascinating worldview. The story is particularly elaborate, with Yakumo and Pi traveling around the world, mainly in Asia, in order to become human. The story does not incorporate much of the technology of modern civilization, so it does not seem old-fashioned at all even now, long after the serialization began. 40 volumes long, but the story is well thought out to the very end, making it a fantasy masterpiece that you will want to read over and over again.
